Radford was founded in 1747 by Captain John Smith as a small trading post on the James River. The town was named after President George Washington's home state of Virginia, which he had visited in 1749. The first courthouse in Radford was built in 1821 and served until 1827 when a new courthouse been erected on Main Street. The first school for children in Radford were founded in 1824 by Rev. Drury and Mrs. Tisdale with 10 pupils from Elizabethtown School District #1. A Methodist church was built shortly afterwards and served as the town's first church until it burned down in 1868. In 1870, extensive development took place along Main Street including the construction of schools, churches and stores that would soon become familiar around town nicknames such as "The Avenue" or "The Square." By 1880, there were over 100 businesses located throughout downtown Radford with more than 50% of the population employed within its boundaries according to one estimate; this growth continued into the 21st century with few exceptions being suburban developments that have taken over most of downtown business district since then (the exception being an attempted redevelopment project known as “Radford Place” which failed to gain support from local leaders due to concerns about traffic congestion).
