Radford is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was founded in 1753 by Captain John Radcliffe and his wife Elizabeth Shortridge. The original site of the town was on the north bank of the Rappahannock River, about a mile downstream from present-day Radford. The first settlers were Puritans who had fled religious persecution in England. Radford grew rapidly during the early 19th century because of its location near Major General James Longstreet's headquarters on the Potomac River and its strategic position as a crossroads between Washington and Richmond. In 1814, President James K. Polk sent an army to besiege Fort Donelson at Knoxville, Tennessee and then march through Radford to move southward against Mobile Bay. When news arrived that Polk's force had been routed at First Manassas Junction (now Arlington), most of the town's residents left for good; only a few remained until 1821 when they returned after Union forces recaptured Knoxville and moved back into Radford. The late 19th century saw many changes within Radford: it became an agricultural center with large plantations such as William Randolph Hearst's Chappaquiddick Plantation; it experienced heavy growth due to coalmining; and it achieved national attention with the construction of Interstate 66 in 1966. However, during prohibition times (1911-1920) RADFORD experienced significant social unrest as local speakeasy owners violated prohibition laws by selling liquor to customers without providing proof of age or other appropriate regulations. A new shopping district called "the Village" was developed around 1955 along U Street NW, which included several dozen stores including Sears Roebuck & Co.'s initial store in downtown Radford before moving out into the newly developed area nearby in 1967; later this suburb came to be known as "The City." In recent years, some commercial development has taken place along I-66W which includes several high-end hotels and restaurants close to major conference centers such as Doha World Cup Stadium and FedEx Field; however residential areas such as "The Town" continue to experience strong population growth although there has been little change overall in property values since 2000.
Radford is a city in and the county seat of Radford County, Virginia. The population was 25,651 as of 2010. It is located on the South Branch Potomac River in Fairfax County. The first European to visit what is now Radford was Captain John Smith on February 14, 1607. He named the area "Rhodesia" after his native land in Greece. In 1792, George Washington's army burned down the old courthouse and jail in what is now downtown Radford to prevent them from being used by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The first store in Radford opened its doors on March 1, 1824. That same year, James Witherspoon built a sawmill and gristmill at present-day North Main Street and West Broad Street. The mill became known as Witherspoon & Sons until it merged with nearby Shockoe Mills in 1954. During World War II, Radford served as an airfield for Boeing B-29 Superfortresses flying strategic bombing missions over Japan; this was one of only two United States cities to serve as an airfield during that conflict (the other being Omaha). After the war ended, most of the bomber activity stopped but some continued through Operation Crossroads which targeted Japanese targets within China; these operations were conducted out of nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
