Radford is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. Radford was founded in 1755 by English colonists as part of the Colony of Hanover. The town was named for General Edmund Radcliffe (1675-1747), who had led an army against the Indians near present-day Radford. In 1864, then–Governor Thomas Ewing designated Radford as the seat of Prince William County after incorporating it from portions of Fairfax and Loudoun counties. Located on Potomac River between Falls Church and Manassas Heights, Radford has been known throughout its history for its agricultural production and also for its large contributing factor toPrince William County's wealth: Its over two million acres (10,000 km2) of farmland makes it one of the most productive areas in Virginia. The first permanent settler in what is now Radford was Nicholas Applegarth, who arrived with his family in August 1755 from Connecticut. His son John apprenticed himself to a plumber in nearby Fairfax before purchasing land here himself in December 1759. He erected a small log cabin on this site which he called “New Arlington” until he moved it to his current location on Middle Creek three years later. By early winter 1760 John had completed construction of a log courthouse and jail which are still standing today within walking distance of each other; these were also one of the few buildings constructed not only in Prince William but also neighboring Fairfax counties during this time period. In January 1761 Nicholas’s brother James Applegarth purchased 10 acres (4 ha) northeast of New Arlington from Nicholas for $50 per acre ($1/ha). This purchase marked where development began around present-day downtown radford; James built two churches – St George’s Episcopal Cathedral located east side High Street between Seventh and Eighth Streets and First Presbyterian Church located just northwest corner Market Court between Fourth and Fifth Streets – as well as several other residences including what is now First Baptist Church building on Third Street across from State Capitol Building

Radford was founded in 1742 by Colonel John Radcliffe. The town was originally called "Newcastle" and then "Raleigh". In 1837, the name of the town was changed to "Radford" after George Washington's home state of Virginia. Radford is one of the oldest towns in Virginia and has been a community since before colonial times.
