Unfortunately for Confederates, Union troops arrived first, burned down all their bridges and destroyed most of their artillery before reaching Fairfax Station. This gave Union troops an advantage as they marched northwest instead of south which would have led them right into Confederate lines had they reached him first. As a result, Confederate General Jubal Early was able to escape capture by crossing the river en route to enemy-held Petersburg and eventually join Grant's army at Appomattox Court House two days later than planned. Although Radford did not see combat during World War II, its proximity to Washington D.C., made it one of many small towns along the Eastern seaboard impacted by warring armies; in particular, Pearl Harbor Day bombing raids against Hiroshima et al took place here between December 7th 1941 and January 6th 1945 (the only US city bombed during World War II). Radford has seen some recent changes as well: since 2000 it has been home to both Dick’s Sporting Goods (a mall/mall store) as well as Tyson’s Chicken wings & fries (founded by Ted Turner).
