Radford is located on the Rappahannock River north of Fairfax and south of Manassas. It was founded in 1768 by George Washington as a small trading post on the Rappahannock River. In 1814, it became an independent town under the name of Alexandria after then-President James K. Polk visited there. In 1846, Radford was renamed for General John Custer during the Mexican–American War and has since been known as "Custer's hometown." The first U.S. Post Office in Radford opened on November 15, 1768, and served until December 1st of that year when it closed because of lack of customers. The first settler in what would become Radford was Capt Benjamin Banning who arrived from Portsmouth, England with his family in early 1769 and established himself along the riverbank just east of what would later become Main Street. By late spring or early summer of that year he had built a cabin near present day Park Avenue which he named Banning's Mills after his father-in-law who had also settled there some time earlier. The first store being built within present day downtown is believed to have been built by Capt John Skinner around this time too although no evidence exists to support this claim; it may instead be connected with nearby First Baptist Church which operated from its earliest days until 1865 when it burned down following a fire that destroyed most of town center (the church still stands). By fall that year additional settlers had arrived including Nicholas Goodrich and Samuel King who both coming from Augusta County Georgia along with their families soon afterwards established themselves at Banning's mills site downstream from where we now sit; today’s Third Street bridge across the Rappahannock River connects these two parts of town nicely>.
