In 1865, during The American Civil War, Radford was one of four towns in Prince William County that sided with Confederate States forces against Union forces. The battle for Radford took place on July 11th and 12th of that year and resulted in nearly 500 Union casualties while only three Confederate soldiers were killed or mortally wounded. Afterward, most residents moved away from what had become known as "the Battlefield" because Reconstruction efforts had failed to make it economically feasible to remain there while goods available from elsewhere were sold at market prices instead of free from taxes assessed by Confederate authorities seeking revenge for their losses. Radford re-emerged as an agricultural center during World War II due to its production of hay and other crops used in munitions manufacturing; however this focus gradually shifted towards more traditional agriculture after 1945 as production facilities for these products grew closer to world markets outside AmericaAfdradfederal government support for local farmers ended following World War IIA few years later Radford's last mill closed down Operations stopped abruptly around 1960 A few years later there was another closure but this time it wasn't due to economic reasons

As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,835 residents; 10 percent more than in 2000. A number of important businesses are located within or near Radford: including Capital Power Company (a public utility), BankUnited Corporation (a banking giant), MasterCard International Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., JBL Audio & Video Corporation and Racine Plastics Corp.. In addition to its rich history and economy, Radford also boasts beautiful scenery - including rolling hills and rural farmland - as well as some impressive architecture: such as Old Main Hospital from 1855 and Saint John's Episcopal Church from 1925.
