Radford is a city in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 41,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington– Alexandria–Falls Church, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lee's army went through here during their march from Richmond to Fredericksburg; General Lee spent two nights at Radford House before moving on to Winchester Court House on Sunday morning 5 November 1801. In 1865 Union general Ulysses S. Grant encampment rested here while his army crossed over the Potomac River into Maryland for its unsuccessful attempt to drive Confederate forces out of Maryland Heights (now Arlington Cemetery). On 10 April 1865, Union general Joseph Hooker arrived at this site and proposed an alliance with Confederate general Robert Ewell which failed because Hooker thought that a large Confederate force would be required to carry out such an agreement - instead only small skirmishes occurred here before both armies retreated back across the river without meeting again. Radford became an incorporated city in 1886 and was named after Edwin Hargrave Radcliffe who served as lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1888-1893 and 1897-1900; he also endowed a college there which became known as Randolph-Macon College after him in 1916. The university first opened its doors in 1896 as George Washington University but it soon gained national prominence due to its founder, George Washington himself (who had earlier given land for it). One aspect which made GWU unique among American universities was that all students were required to wear dress uniforms until 1938 - something not usual among US colleges then or since!
