In 1830Radford had a population of 2200 people with 350 shops and 50 families residing on Main Street which later became known as "the main thoroughfare." Although tobacco farming predominated until after 1850 most land within present day Radford was virgin forest untillogging began extracting timber starting about 1800AD with sawmills soon followed by grist mills then lumberyards still operating into late 20th century giving it one of TidewaterVirginia's longest continuous commercial corridors ever! The first settler in Radford was John Randolph who arrived in 1743. He built a cabin near what is now known as Main Street. In 1746, he married Anne Harrison who also came from England. They set up a home on present day Jefferson Avenue and named their daughter Anna after her mother's birthplace in Scotland. The couple had five children: James (1747-1807), Lucy (1749-1831), William (1752-1827), John (1755-1824) and Anna herself (1758-1844). In 1814, the American Civil War began and many families left for Richmond because of the war effort. Annandale County did not join Confederate forces until April 11th 1861 due to religious reasons; however James Randolph took his family with him when he joined the Confederacy as did many other Virginians including his father John Randolph Sr., brotherWilliam Randolph II & sons James Jr., Wm IV & VI and son Richard Blanding among others Radford served as capital of Virgnia during Reconstruction; it saw much political activity including elections that were monitored by federal troops barracks located just outside of town After Reconstruction ended, Radford reverted back to its original status as an agricultural community with some manufacturing activities but no lasting economic development
Ralph Radford was born in 1851 in Cumberland County, Virginia. He was a congressman from the state of Virginia from 1907 to 1912 and 1916 to 1919. He also served as the governor of Virginia from 1923 to 1927 and 1931 to 1933.
