In 1872, an American mountain club was formed in Portsmouth and began organizing climbs of Mount Washington. The club became successful and organized more climbs over the next few years. In 1896, a new mountain opened up in Portsmouth - Mount Zion National Park. This made it easier for people to climb Mount Washington and other mountains in the park. In 1912, the first strong earthquake hit Portsmouth and damage was done to many buildings. This caused people to start climbing hills around town to find new places to climb. Later that year, the city council passed an ordinance making it illegal to ascent any hill without a permit from the city government. This made it harder for people to climb hills, but did not stop them from doing so. In 1916, another strong earthquake hit Portsmouth and again damaged buildings. This caused some climbers to move away from town and start Climbing Again Ranch near present-day Blacksburg; this helped make Mount Zion National Park even more popular among climbers than ever before.
Portsmouth, Virginia is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fairfax County. The town was founded in 1757 as Portsmouth Plantation by Captain John Smith and his family. Portsmouth was first named "Newport" after Sir James Newburgh, Lord High Admiral of England and Scotland who had fought against French and Spanish forces during the Seven Years' War. In 1771, Portsmouth became an incorporated town under the name of "Portsmouth." It merged with other towns in Fairfax County in 1851 to form the consolidated city of Fairfax. The City of Portsmouth has a land area of just over two square miles and a population density of just over 100 people per square mile. The history of Portsmouth goes back to early British settlements on this site including Fort Necessity built by Colonel George Washington in 1747 as part of his effort to secure control over the Shenandoah Valley from Native Americans. Building began on this fortification soon after completion, but it did not take long for Indian attacks to begin reducing its effectiveness. By 1748, however, Fortress Newburgh had become effective defense against any Indian attack that might occur within range of Philadelphia (then known as London). After several years’ hard fighting by both American and British soldiers, General Philip Schuyler relieved General James Webb commanding Fort Necessity on December 12th,1758; Newburgh then lay abandoned until appropriate repairs could be made in order to reopen it as an artillery battery effective January 1st, 1759 under Major-General Nathanael Greene! On October 13th President George Washington issued an executive order proclaiming December 12th old Fort Necessity vacated and vested withthe status thereof being “a proper place for a military post”!
