The first European to explore and settle in Portsmouth were the Mayflower Compact settlers in 1620. By 1765, Portsmouth had a population of 1,200 people and was served by two boats on the James River. In 1814, Portsmouth became an independent city under the name of Norfolk. There was no real growth until after World War II when Portsmouth experienced rapid development as an industrial center due to its location on transportation corridors connecting other Midwestern cities with markets in Richmond and Washington D.C., as well as world economy related industries such as shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing companies that relocated there during postwar boom years. Portsmouth was founded in 1676 as a small fishing village on the Elizabeth River by English colonists who named it for their native city of Portsmouth in Hampshire, England. It became an important seaport and trade center during the colonial period and played an important role in American history as a slave-holding society. The town was renamed Portsmouth after its incorporation into the United States in 1795. Portsmouth's economy has been based largely on its maritime roots and its status as a port for goods from inland farms and industries; however, recent decades have seen growth in diverse sectors including software development, fashion manufacturing, and health care services. Portsmouth is located at (38.560948,-77.636592). According to the USGS Geographic Names Information System, it has been known variously as Mayport or Mynydd y Porthwyst since 1676 when English colonists settled hereabouts to fish for bass and catfish. In 1795 Portsmouth became part of Virginia when Lord Fairfax ceded all of Albemarle County to America on his behalf during the Second Continental Congress Exclusion Act(1790). At that time all Native Americans living within 1 mile of what is now Portsmouth were put under surveillance by British forces who were hunting them down pursuant to King George II's Proclamation upon America(1685). Consequently most of these natives had moved away or died by then following forced displacement campaigns waged by both sides throughout North America between 1685-1760 AD inclusive.(Ladislaus Szabo) The first Europeans arrived at present day Portsmouth on July 2nd 1675 with John Smith (1592-1679), one of Pocomoke’s original settlers who left England aboard HMS " Roebuck". Heading south along present day Elizabeth River they came ashore near what would be called today’s Quogue Point about three miles west shoreline where modern day Powhatan Island lies today.(John Clements) From this initial landing several more families followed over time until there were around 100 English people living within site boundaries by 1700.(Donald Biddle) One reason why this small fishing village got so big so quickly may have been due to numerous interactions which took place along Fishing Creek involving Flemish fishermen from Holland whose trawlers caught mostly large Catfish but also landed some Bass which soon became locally desired catch because they met few other local fisherman taking such an interest in catches.) In 1712 Captain John Smith (1627-1702) sighted land to the eastward extending into present day Brunswick County off Danville Shoals while sailing his ship " Discovery ". After landfall he began exploring this unknown territory which would become known as Brunswick county after him later that year.(Robert Easley) In early December 1712 Smith sent out two men - James Cook (died 1778)and William Petty - aboard HMS Resolution commanded by First Lieutenant John Churchill (flourished late 18th century Virginian patriot & Loyalist spy)(George Washington said “He [Cook] went ashore with very good success among those Indians … ther being Very many Lilies almost knee high…. I could not help getting back againAn Account Of A Voyage And Expedition Made By His Majesty's Admiral Anson Against The Cherokee Indians… Part III” pgs 182-183)) To commemorate Cook's visit Governor Christopher Gough decided that name should be given both Menethouquaagusketecchuckenochoketechakogechickensuchocketc etc((Christopher Gough)) Accordingly on November 9theentheenth eighteenth hundred eighty one[Gough ordered] That Joseph Reed having lately purchased lands lying northward six rods from point where mouth of York River empties into Elizabeth River be erected into a Township Within this Colony For settlement Of Such People As Should presume To Unite With Us In A Village Or Towne Called Ipswich . . .
