Bush Presidential Library Marine Park (home to the world's largest collection of naval period equipment) and Headquarters for the Virginia State Police which are also located in Portsmouth. The area around Portsmouth has been inhabited by humans since at least 7500 BC when Paleo-Indians established villages along the Eastern Shore of Hampton Roads. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Portsmouth were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624 as part of Admiral Robert Cecil's Jamestown Expedition under Governor Walter Raleigh.. In 1627 English colonists led by Captains John Smith discovered new lands on this coast including present day Hampshire County and landed at what is now known as "Fenway Point". AfterCaptain Smith's discovery there were several attempts by English entrepreneurs to establish settlements on this coastline but all failed because of rivalry among these groups over control of this valuable land parcel.. In 1745 Captain David Dixon sailed from London with 256 men on board his ships HMS Victory and HMS Enterprise to establish trading posts along the Eastern Shore including Fenway Point.. Captain Dixon renamed his post "Newport News" after his home city before returning back to England.. While at Newport News Captain Dixon met Major General James Montresor who offered him additional land near Petersburg if he could find enough men willing to fight for him against French forces besieging Louisbourg which lay nearby.. This event marks one step forward for Virginian independence from Great Britain while also creating tensions between France and England over trade interests In 1747 Lieutenant Colonel Edward Braddock reached New York City through Chesapeake Bay whereas General James Wolfe had earlier campaigned through Maryland successfully conquering most of Canada westward thenceforth known as Upper Canada Lt Col Braddock found support from local Native Americans allied with their British enemies French Canadians who had taken up arms against British rule . On July 12th 1748 Lt Col Braddock was killed leading a force into battle against French Canadian troops at Chalk River Landing near modern day Danville VA when his flagship Roanoke came ashore too late following heavy fighting Upon newsof Lt Col Braddock's death two days later George Washington ordered Genlmajor Charles Lee commanding US troops stationed at Fort Necessity southward along Pamlico Sound towards Halifax Nova Scotia instead destroying Quebecs major military stronghold . From this point forward both Great Britain & France sought control over North America via proxy wars with various Indian tribes
