Portsmouth, Virginia is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The population was 8,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Winchester-Ashland, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Portsmouth is first settled in 1724 by English colonists as Great Falls Station on the York River. The town's name derived from its location on Portsmouth Bay, which faced Hampton Roads on one side and Chesapeake Bay on the other. In 1762, Portsmouth became a port for goods coming up the York River from Maryland and West Virginia. During World War II, it was an important military base for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). Today, Portsmouth is home to several businesses and schools that support local government services. The history of Portsmouth goes back to early European settlement when English colonists arrived in search of new land to colonize. The first permanent Europeans to arrive in what is now Portsmouth were French traders who landed in 1607 seeking trade with Native Americans living along the Potomac River. By 1612, these French traders had built a trading post called Fort Caroline on Charles river near present-day downtown Portsmouth. In 1619, General John Smyth laid out a plan for what would become known as "Portsmouth" after his headquarters at Point Lookout on James river across from modern day downtown Petersburg. Smyth named his new town after Admiral Sir George Pocock who had commandeered HMS "Venerable" during Queen Anne's War (1702-04). After years of development work by many people including Captain John Smith (1621-1688), General Nicholas Harrowes (1646-1714), Commodore Christopher Newport (1598-1666), and Rear Admiral Samuel Graves (1725-1785), Fort Pocock was completed in 1762 and served as both a military fortification and commercial center until it was destroyed by fire in 1836." During World War II, Greater Portsmouth played an important role as one of three American ports used for loading materiel destined for strategic bomber units stationed throughout North America skiesward during World War II providing fighter pilots with air superiority over Germany while American warships screened Allied shipping movements off German coastlines protected shipping lanes vital to war effort. For two years starting October 1939 through May 1941 there were 2 million passengers passed through this harbor daily; more than any other U.S city or harbor combined! In 1951 USS Nimitz Harry S Truman docked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard under dry dock number 3D1 after being damaged during operations off Viet Nam she lay stricken until reassembled by naval yards workers under her original hull number 901On 15 July 1950 USS Constitution George Washington docked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard under dry dock number 3D2 after having been damaged during operations off Viet Nam she lay stricken until reassembled by naval yards workers under her original hull number 902 On 10 September 1950 USS Constitution Daniel Webster collided with USS Lexington while they were training outfitting commissioning exercises off Dutch Harbor Alaska
In the early 1900s, Americans were beginning to become interested in firearms. Gun manufacturers began to produce firearms for both the military and civilian markets. American shooters started wearing firearm t-shirts as a way of promoting their hobby. At first these shirts were made from cotton or other simple materials, but over time they became more colorful and designed to show off their guns and/or NRA memberships. The NRA was founded in 1875, so it is not surprising that the organization has a long history with firearm t-shirts. The NRA has been involved in many public campaigns to promote gun safety and Second Amendment rights, including support for the Brady Bill which required nationwide background checks on all gun sales. In fact, NRA members often wear firearm t-shirts at events to show their support for Second Amendment rights!
The first firearm-related t-shirt was created by a group of students at the University of California, Berkeley in 1972. The shirt depicted a handgun and the slogan "Firearm freedom is our right."
Portsmouth, Virginia is located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The city was founded by General John Forbes in 1780 as a small trading post on the James River. Portsmouth quickly became a major shipping center and its economy was based largely on agriculture and fishing. The city was first occupied by Native Americans before European settlers arrived. In 1814, Portsmouth became part of the United States after it was captured by American forces during the Mexican-American War. The war brought many new residents to Portsmouth, including soldiers who were stationed at Fort Monroe in Newport News. After the war, Portsmouth grew rapidly as ships began to call at the port for supplies and trade. By 1830, Portsmouth had become one of the largest cities in Virginia and had developed into a strong commercial center with a population of over 100,000 people. In 1836, Commodore James Farragut led an assault on Mexico City which led to victory in the Battle of San Juan de la Cruz and made Portsmouth an important naval base both inside and outside of America. This success led to increased business for Portsmouth and its merchants, who began developing new products such as cotton ginners and steamboats. In 1847, Commodore David Dixon Porter replaced Farragut as captain of Ulysses S. Grant’s flagship during his transatlantic journey across North America and decided to establish a permanent military presence in Hampton Roads (the modern day Norfolk Naval Shipyard). For this purpose, Porter built Fort Eustis near Portsmouth Beach on Chesapeake Bay In 1916-17 warships from USS Lexington picked up munitions from Italian submarines sunk off Albania while their crews were interned there during World War I; these munitions ended up being used against Italy within months following Lexington’s return home Between 1865-1868 Union army Major General Jubal Early march through town for his 2nd Cavalry Division's Campaign against Confederate forces east of Lynchburg; early skirmishes took place here between infantry brigades under Early's command USS Constitution (1802) spent two weeks ashore at Fortress Point Light Battery on Sept 15th - Nov 7th 1800 Blockading Jefferson Davis' fleet threats Quarters House Shoals (present day Annapolis Junction), Maryland After years of anticipation culminated with Presidents Abraham Lincoln & Andrew Johnson signing legislation authorizing creationofUS Virginias Seashore Preservation Commission effective July 1st 1901 creating Agrarian Shoreline Protection Authority encompassing all shorelines west facing Prince William Sound including present day Norfolk County; voting approximately 6000 citizens participated resulting Georgetown Channel becoming opened seasonally 9/10ths deep beginningApr 1912 destructive waves caused $500K worth damage/incident total since project inception
