Poquoson is a town in Frederick County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area. Poquoson is home to the Poquoson Graham School and Poquoson Middle School. The first permanent settler in what would become Poquoson was George Washington who arrived in 1753. The town was founded by Captain John Smith on April 6, 1754 as "Pocono" after his father's home on Pocotaligo Creek. On November 3, 1800, the General Assembly approved a deed for the town to be named "Poquoson". In 1814–1815 William Hurlbut built Cane Hill Plantation near present-day Cemetery Road and Church Street which became property of James Monroe when he became President of the United States that year. In 1825 John Pope developed Pope's millrace which made ready an area for village development around it and soon there were several stores and two schools open in what would become Poquoson – Greenockie's Store on Church Street (opened about 1829) and Mr Rome's store (opened about 1830). A post office called "Pope" was established in 1830; it ceased operation in 1903. The first schoolmaster was Ebenezer Thomas who taught grades one through twelve from October 2, 1830 to May 15, 1831 before moving to another location until December 1st when he finally opened school at 173 Headwaters Road with thirty students learning arithmetic and reading common sense books while their mothers cooked dinner upstairs; all day long! A second school opened January 12th 1861 with eighty students under teacher Mrs Seward & six teachers Fayette Davis & Willis Cartwright also teaching English language arts alongside mathematics horseback riding etc.. After only four years classes had been increased to one hundred students with Mrs Seward continuing as headmistress until 1865 when she moved out east to marry lawyer Alfred Ewing Jr.. Poquoson was founded in 1796 by Captain John Smith and his family as an agricultural settlement on the Potomac River. The town was named for Pierre-Jacques Poquoson, Sieur de La Fayette who fought against Great Britain in the American Revolution. In 1801 Poquoonee Creek and its mouth were explored by General James K. Polk during his survey of the Potomac River for President James K. Polk and others interested in developing the area around Washington D.C., which led to development of Poquoson as a commercial center with mills and warehouses along the riverfront. In 1826 Poquoonee Creek was renamed for General William Troup after defeats at Battle of Monmouth Heights and Yorktown Peninsula Campaigns; however, no creek has been named for him since then. In 1838 Partridge's Mill became one of first commercial establishments inPoquoson when it opened up shop beside what is now Dupont Circle adjacent to present day 3rd Street NW corner Georgia Avenue NW (now Embassy Row). It continued until 1865 when it closed due to financial problems brought on by increased freight rates associated withrailroad construction across Washington D.C.. During World War II most of Poquoson's male residents enlisted in military serviceeither through local draft boards or enlistment centers located throughout Prince George's County including Fort Belvoir near Fairfax Station and Camp Porter near Winchester Village; all men were required to wear uniform even if they did not own any firearms or armor other than helmets which they wore above their clothing while working outside from dawn until dusk (or later if inside).
