The Town of Poquoson was founded on October 25th 1786 by James Webb with General Edward Braddock as his lieutenant general commanding all Allied forces marching against British army Major General Charles Lee's army at Saratoga Springs in New York State. On February 14th 1814 when George Cadwalader replaced Webb as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia he appointed John Pemberton to be Captain of Militia for Fairfax County and Representative from that county to the House of Burgesses. Colonel Robert Ewell led an expedition against Indian tribes living near Alexandria in 1802-03 and burned their villages including one located near present day POQUOSON. In 1804 General James Anderson founded what is now called Anderson’s Store on Main Street which later became known as Veterans Affairs Hospital (now Bethesda Medical Center). VA Hospital opened its doors in 1960 and continues to operate today as one of America’s leading healthcare providers. In 1865 Delegate John D'Alesandro conferred upon Poquoson “the distinction unique among American towns” for having been chosen to be “the site for a permanent military installation” during the Civil War caused by growing fears about Confederate troop movements along the Potomac River Valley between Frederick and Manassas Junction MD

In 1792, John Poquoson donated 352 acres (128 hectares) north of present-day Poquoson to create New Hanover Parish and another 364 acres (158 hectares) east to provide for Loudoun County. Many aspects of early Poquoson history are still celebrated today including its annual Fourth of July parade down Main Street which begins at High Street and ends near Interstate 95;Poquoson's most famous resident - Rufus Wainwright - who was born in nearby Wiseboro in 1831; and its annual softball game between local high schools known as "The Game".
The Poquoson community was established in 1799 as a result of the marriage of Captain John Poquoson and his bride, Anne James. The town was named after Captain Poquoson's father, who had been killed in action during the American Revolution. The first school in the community was built on land donated by Mrs. Rebecca Fenton. In 1851, the town became an incorporated municipality under the name ofPoquoson. In 1862, Confederate General Jubal Early moved his army through Virginia and into Maryland before turning westward toward Richmond. On July 12, 1862, General Robert Ewell's cavalry brigade encountered Confederate forces near Manassas Junction and were quickly routed. This event is considered to be one of the pivotal moments in Union military history because it demonstrated that Confederate troops could move without being detected and potentially very successful at escaping capture or destruction while they continued to support their general. In 1865, following Reconstruction which ended slavery in America, Poquoson began to experience increased population growth due to new immigration from Europe and Asia (among others). By 1870, there were over 100 people living in Poquoson with about 40 businesses active. After years of growth and development, a fire destroyed much of the downtown area in 1889 which reduced population by 50% but did not stop economic activity from continuing; this helped lead to another growth period for Poquoson during which time there were nearly 200 residents by 1910 On October 5th 1920 local citizens organized a protest against racial segregation when white supremacists tried to march into town carrying torches as part of a rally promoting white supremacy across America; this event is considered one of Virginias most iconic protests against racism ever occurring
