The original settlement at Poquoson was founded by James Sprague and his brother John in 1772. It was named for General Anthony Poquoson, who had died during the American Revolution. The first post office in Poquoson was established in 1781. In 1813, Poquoson became a part of the Alexandria Circuit Court system and has been governed under that jurisdiction since then. In 1837, George Washington purchased 12 acres (4 ha) of land adjacent to present-day Poquoson from Nicholas Sparks for $1125 cash and 10 horses. Washington used the land as a summer home and grazing farm until his death in 1849. He bequeathted the property to his three daughters-in-law: Martha Washington Allston, Nabby Allston Marshall and Mercedes Marshall Randolph: each received an acre (0.30 ha). After her death in 1913, Nabby Allston's daughter Eleanor gave away 1/3 of her father's land as well as all rights to her mother's line after she married Franklin D Roosevelt; this donation forms what is now known as "Eleanor Roosevelt Park."
