Poquoson is a town in Caroline County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Poquoson was James Robertson in 1792. The town was named after Captain John Poquoson who had been born in England and died as a result of an illness there in 1794. In 1802 James Robertson's widow married General George Washington and they moved to Northern Virginia where they lived until their deaths in 1821 and 1825 respectively. Their son JohnRobertson became the second Mayor of Poquoson from 1901 to 1903 and he also served as Clerk of the Circuit Court from 1888-1891. On July 10, 1861, Confederate States Army general Robert Ewell moved his army into Fairfax County,Virginia to attack Ulysses S Grant's Union forces which were entrenched at Appomattox Court House near Mechanicsville. On July 12th Ewell attacked Union positions around Poquoson and pushed his way past Union lines supported by artillery fire from Fort Monroe on Chesapeake Bay which inflicted significant losses on the Union force including many dead and wounded soldiers who lay scattered amongst trees along the banks of Romney River yards away from friendly batteries ashore at Norfolk Navy Yard across Hampton Roads National Battlefield Park today (July 12th). Lt Colonel Preston Smith commanding Company K 4th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Brigade reported that during this engagement "the people here did splendidly" despite being under constant fire for four hours without respite before nightfall - thus confirming reports of widespread human casualties with little or no opportunity for burial or medical attention resulting in over 50% loss among infantrymen killed or wounded during battle described as follows: "A field battery opened upon us about 5 minutes after we got within its range; it continued firing until about 9 pm; then it pulled off its guns...and all went back to their tents without discharging any more rounds". Although outnumbered three-to-one numerically by Confederate forces Smith managed to hold his position against superior numbers while inflicting heavy casualties on his opponents causing General Ulysses S Grant finally to order an withdrawal two days later when news arrived that Robert Ewell had made good his escape southward unhurt having failed to capturing any important targets such as President Davis’ mansion at Manassas Junction - thus achieving one of history's most dramatic battlefield successes during the Civil War era achieved while under enemy gunfire! A plaque erected next to a fallen soldier remains dedicated today (2011) to these brave men who gave their lives fighting for our country! The first post office was established at Poquosonsville on October 15, 1865 by Wm Henson Postmaster General USArmy under command of Brigadier General Jubal Early. Thirteen years later mail reached Poquoson through Alexandria via Potomac River Bridge over Bull Run Creek becoming USS Monitor’s final delivery point for supplies delivering materials eastward across America’s largest waterway prior to WWII! In 1881 Poquosonian citizens voted unanimously not annexation into Arlington County because they desired more autonomy than what Arlington offered them – although annexation eventually occurred due largely to pressure from Richmond mayor Joseph Pankhurst whose efforts resulted in increasing taxes on businesses located withinPoquosonian limits while failing ever once ToCOTax revenue generated by property tax collections!! Today much poxoni nostalgia surrounds events related TOHIS weeklong fiesta markingatoin January 7th thru 11th instigated bv Town Council member Wendell Berryhill !!!"
