Poquoson, Virginia is a small town in Caroline County,Virginia. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and forms part of the Poquoson-Fallston School District. The first permanent white settler in what became Poquoson was Captain John Smith in 1755 during the French and Indian War when he explored the Potomac River for British soldiers. He named his new settlement after General James Monckton's commandant at Fort Duquesne on Pennsylvania's Susquehanna River who had been killed earlier that year while invading Canada. In 1812, Captain John Smith's grandson, Robert Epps built a house on landowning Mrs Catherine Randolph which still stands today as one of Poquoson's most recognizable landmarks. During President George Washington's stay at Mount Vernon in 1799-1800, Mrs Randolph hosted him and her son Mr John Quincy Adams (later Ulysses S Grant) as they visited Mount Vernon to view its extensive gardens and grounds including the well known "Presidential House." etta site has been inhabited by various cultures over time: By Prehistoric Native Americans; Colonial Europeans; American Revolutionary War veterans; First blush patriots such as Edmund Pendleton Frickand Nathaniel Gorham shoemakers settled here circa 1800s; Japanese during World War II (1942), 1942-1945 American naval forces landed on this peninsula resulting in more than 1,500 Okinawan refugees resettling here from Japan circa 1945 onwards until its establishment as an american Naval airbase postwar 1946 saw very few residents arrive due to fears of possible conflict with Japan over Okinawa prewar holdings.; After America acquired control of Okinawa following World War II there were plans for a military runway/ housing enclave to be established adjacent Tojo Airfield but these never materialized.; Today much of Poquoson rests within National Register Historic District boundaries thanks both to numerous contributing buildings/ structures dating back to prewar days including several post office buildings (1897), public works department building (1892), schoolhouse (1881) - now used as a museum ;several churches also located on or near campus including St Joseph Catholic Church which served as early religious education center for students grades K-8th starting about 1868 Protestant Episcopal church started services here about 1830s Presbyterian congregation founded in 1884 moved from nearby Harrisonburg . . . . Poquoson was founded in 1777 by Capt. John Poquoson and his men as a small town on the James River. The town grew rapidly, becoming an important stop on the river for traders and travelers. In 1855, Poquoson became the capital of Virginia when Richmond was moved to the area from Williamsburg. The town experienced significant growth following World War II, with many new homes being built in the surrounding area. The population reached 100,000 in 1970 and has continued to grow since then. The first Europeans to visit Poquoson were the Spanish in 1559. The town was founded by Captain Diego Lopez on a small island near the mouth of the James River. In 1607, the English established a trading post at Poquoson which functioned as a center for the region. The town was renamed Richmond in 1746 after General George Washington’s Headquarters during the American Revolution. In 1802, Poquoson became part of Alexandria Township and was incorporated as a village in 1839. It was again renamed Richmond in 1865 when it became an independent city. On December 12, 1861, Poquoson joined the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War and subsequently lost its status as an independent city.
