The present-day town was developed as a commuter community for Prince William County farmers and factory workers who built homes along Route 66 (now West Main Street). By World War II, Poquoson had emerged as an important manufacturing center with defense contractor Boeing having its headquarters there until 1970; other major businesses included Wards Brothers Paper Co., Colony Furniture Corp., First National Bank of Lynchburg, Dominion Tobacco Co., and Pigeons Nest Farms LLC. After years of decline during the late 20th century, textile production revived in Poquoson beginning in the early 21st century through several local companies such as Factory Outlet Inc., JBL Audio & Video Inc., HanesBrands USA Inc., Allied Signal Corp., and UPMC Health Plan plc.; however, overall economic decline has continued throughout recent decades. In 2016Poquoson's mayor resigned after admitting to using campaign donations to cover up his wife's adultery; he later pleaded guilty to one count of ethics violation and served six months in jail before being released on bail while awaiting trial on five additional counts related to similar offenses.
