The next year (1813), Colonel Thomas Brown erected another octagon-shaped target on land owned by him at White Sands Creek near today's Petersburg. This target had 20 small circles around it, each 2 feet deep and 1 foot wide. Colonel Brown thought that this new game would help Toombs learn how to aim his musket better." Poquoson is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 9,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Steubenville, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1738 by Captain John Smith and his party on the Roanoke River as Point Comfort. In 1802, Poquoson became part of Cumberland County, Virginia. The county seat changed to Winchester in 1814 and to Richmond in 1835. From 1933 until its incorporation into Loudoun County in 1957, Poquoson was known as South Potomac Township. On February 14, 2007, it lost its independent status and became an unincorporated community within Loudoun County once again. Poquoson is located at (39.725959,-75.316889). According to the U.S."Census Handbook" for 2000: "the border of Poquoson Town Range [is] east of I-95 just south of exit 118A off I-95 near Winchester". It includes most of what is now South Potomac Township; however not all buildings were included in that annexation including three Masonic lodges which are located north of US Route 7 between Clarksburg and North Potomac Junction and one school building located west of US Route 7 between Clarksburg and Dumfries Roads (now called Fairfax Road) which were also annexed along with other parts of South Potomac Township (including present day West Lawn). According to the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the current name for Poquoson may be derived from Powhatan word "poqueh" meaning "temporary dwelling", this being applied to two sites - one on or near modern day Court House Street (), where a smallpox hospital operated during the Revolutionary War under British rule; another site about southeast corner Old Dominion Road () about where modern day Piney Branch Rd ends (). There are no definitive answers as to when exactly this change happened but it's generally presumable without any specific evidence given that it did not take place over night or overnight even though some early records do make mention thereof...over time people gradually came up with names such as Cloverdale(), Friendship Heights(), Pentagon Heights(); etc., giving us today’s name ultimately derived from Powhatan words meaning “townsite” or “settlement”.." In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell built a small cannon battery at Point Lookout overlooking Fort Monroe when he withdrew his army from Petersburg after Union forces destroyed that fortress.; later that year Congress passed an act authorizing purchase by the government for $5 million dollars by men who would build fortifications on Alexandria Peninsula opposite Hampton Roads; these fortifications eventually became known as Fort Monroe National Monument (). When Washington D C moved out of Richmond Arsenal following Appomattox Court House victory over Lee's Army on April 9 1865() Point Lookout served as an artillery batteries observation post until discarded guns were burned down in 1936 (); Goat Rocks () exists today where those guns used to stand while point lookout also continued serving intermittently throughout WW2 through 1945 activities such as mine clearance operations due to proximity/geology reasons

It was founded in 1792 by English settlers who named it for General James Forbes's family estate on the Potomac River Poquoson Creek. The first post office in Poquoson was established in 1809. In 1865, Poquoson became part of the newly formed Commonwealth of Virginia and lost its incorporated status until 1951. From 1871 to 1901, Poquoson was the seat of Prince William County government; from 1901 to 2002 it was the seat of Fairfax County government. In 1792, General James Forbes built an estate on the Potomac River called "Great House Farm". He also acquired land on which he built a series of homes known as Great House Manor and Great House Estate. In 1800, Forbes sold his holdings to John Wise and moved into his new home. By 1809, Poquoson had become associated with Great House Manor because it housed one of Wise's two stores and some other businesses near where present-day Main Street meets Courtland Avenue. Some members of the Forbes family continued to live there until their death in 1860. In 1865, when Richmond became an independent city separate from Virginias capital city Richmond, Great House Manor passed through hands again and finally came under control of Fairfax County government as part of that county's annexation by Arlington Township in 1901 following the creation of Fairfax County. At that time all estates within Arlington Township were included withinPrince William County unless they were exempted by special law due to their distance from any major roads or military installations inside or outside Arlington Township boundaries (e.g., Great House Manor remained outside this boundary until 1951). During World War II many residents chose not to evacuate during what is now known as The Battle for Petersburg due to concerns about food shortages later experienced throughout The war areas such as Northern Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads eastward along Interstate 95 towards Washington Dc.. This area would be reoccupied by U S Army troops after hostilities ended 200 years later during Operation Desert Storm
