Poquoson is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lynchburg Micropolitan Statistical Area. Poquoson is located on the Rappahannock River and has a total area of 34.5 square miles (86 km2). Poquoson was established in 1749 by Captain John Smith as Fort George on the Rappahannock River. In 1812, it became Poquoson Plantation when Colonel George Washington sold it to James Buchanan for $3,000. Poquoson's first store and school were built there in 1827. The town was incorporated in 1854. The first post office was opened at Poquoson on October 25, 1857, by General Robert Ewell during the Mexican-American War; it served until 1861 when it was moved to Petersburg because of Confederate threats to Richmond against President Abraham Lincoln's wishes (). In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant invested money into the local paper mill that would soon become one of America's largest paper mills; starting operations in 1865, Poquoson became known as "The Paper Mill Capital of the Confederacy." In 1870–71, construction began on what would become one of America's largest textile mills; Opened in 1971 and now known as Patriot Mills (), Poquoson produced more than 350 million yards (300 metric tons) of fabric each year from its plant until its closure in 2014-15 after 35 years of continuous operation (). A cotton gin and machine shop were erected between 1889 and 1906 along with other small industrial buildings including a foundry (); these are no longer extant but their foundations remain visible near intersection of High Street () and Market Road (). After 1960 most manufacturing had stopped while few people remained employed within the community save for some agriculture which took place until 1974 when an ethanol plant started up making biodiesel fuel (). Today much outside development takes place with only scattered remnants remaining such as: a water tower still standing next to high school; a couple trees left standing near busy intersection where Market Road meets High Street (); all around there are piles of bricks/ stones leftover from recent development taking place nearby
