Poquoson is a town in Chesterfield County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Poquoson is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the Potomac River and is served by the Poquoson Elementary School District. The first permanent settlers in what would become Poquoson were three men from Gloucester County who came to this area in 1776 during the American Revolution as part of a group called "The Pioneers". The town was founded on April 20, 1777, when General John Forbes ordered Captain James Cook's ship HMS Resolution to be paddled upriver to establish trade with Native Americans. After landing his men and exploring for several days, Cook realized that there was no suitable spot for him or his men to build a house since there was only one small meadow where they could land their ship and park their cannons. So Cook ordered hisMen not to build any houses but instead use whatever tools they had available to explore the area until they found another site that would allow them to build sturdy homes. Captain John Smith also explored this area during his search for new lands west of Jamestown after leaving England in 1607. He arrived at what would become Poquoson on September 12, 1627 while on board the " Discovery ". A few days later he sighted an Indian village which he supposed to be Powhatan Indians because he had seen similar villages near Jamestown before. However upon further exploration it appeared that these people were actually friendly natives who invited him ashore so that he could buy some scalps from them (he never did). Upon returning home with his goods Smith reported back about this encounter which likely sparked more curiosity about this region by other Englishmen looking for new possibilities for expansion westward during this time period! After Captain John Smith's visit many people SETTLED HERE IN POQUOSON AND OTHER AREAS NEARBY INCLUDING WILIAMETOWN ON THE POTOMAC . . . BY DECEMBER OF 1627 MANY OF THESE NEW INVESTIGATORS WERE WARRANTED TO REPORT BACK TO GOVERNOR WILLIAM Fairfax EVERY TWO MONTHS ABOUT THEIR PROGRESS AND ALSO TO REPORT ABOUT ANY LAND OWNED OR TAKEN OVER BY THE Natives THEY CAME INTO CONTACT WITH … THIS REPORTING SYSTEM WAS CALLED 'THE BUREAU'. In 1793 two brothers named Nicholas and George Washington owned land hereabouts which led directly into history as both Presidents of America! Their descendants still live here today and maintain close ties with their ancestors! Today Poquoson is known as one of America’s most vibrant communities – home to businesses and residents who enjoy local culture and natural assets such as its rich history, gracious architecture, wide open spaces and wonderful restaurants etc., all within walking distance of each other. Economic development over recent years has brought numerous jobs downtown including sales jobs at nearby Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (now tire giant Tyvek) as well as technology companies like Dell Technologies; Ford Motor Company; JBL Electronics; US Airways Airlines; Verizon FiOS TV service provider Stonehenge Broadcasting Group LLC.; Canon Incorporated.; Michael Graves Dental Supply Co.; Starburst Tattoo Studio etc., plus full-time residents working in doctorates/ medicalspecialties/administrative jobs all within easy reach either downtown or proximate rural areas such as Henrico County schools or family farmsacies like Loudoun County plantations! In addition many smaller businesses have grown up around government contracting opportunities – such as those providing construction services or agricultural products – makingPoquoson a highly competitive business environment indeed! It should also be noted that due primarily to its strategic location within easy driving distance of My backyard (Richmond) –Poquoson continues experiencing robust economic growth despitearterial events like Hurricanes Irene & Floyd visited our community recently - evidenced by increased job postings now being available online almost immediately following storms' impact!). Poquoson was a small town in Virginia from 1800 to 1851. The population was 914 in 1800, and 1,075 in 1851. It was named for John Poquoson, an officer in the Continental Army who died at the Battle of Saratoga. The town began as a small farming community on the James River about two miles west of present-day Petersburg. In 1792, Poquoson's first settler, Samuel Gerrard, purchased 6 acres of land east of the river and built a log cabin. By 1800, Poquoson had a residents and had developed into a small but thriving community with responsible government and education. In 1801-1802, during the American Revolution against British rule, Poquoson's citizens fought under General George Washington at Saratoga Springs. After Saratoga Campaigns ended with British capitulation on September 14th,1800 - three days before Patriot's Day - many veterans returned home to find their families reunited and their homes restored or renewal started. In 1821-1822 following Virginia's admission to the United States as a new country - after centuries of being part of England - Poquoson became one of its most important cities due to its growing trade with other U.S.-controlled countries including Canada and Mexico City. The influx of new immigrants also created tension within thecommunity over social issues such as ethnicity (European vs Mexican), religion (Catholic vs Protestant), gender (female landowners owning property versus male farmers) and sexual characteristics (same-sex marriage prohibited). Despite these challenges facingPoquosons whomever lived there during this time period; it is documented that many people were proud to call themselves Virginians regardless of social affiliation or skin color even though most practicing English culture prevailed at that time throughout much of America
