Poquoson is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Alexandria-Arlington-Manassas Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1777 Poquoson's first settler, John Poindexter, erected a log cabin on the now known as "Old Hickory" creek. A post office called Poquoson was established in 1814 and remained in operation until its closure in 1959. The community derived its name from Potosi Creek which flows through it. The area that is now Poquoson was originally inhabited by the Powhatan Confederacy who used it for hunting and fishing grounds. From about 1607 to 1628 English colonists arrived in what is now Prince William County and began landowning here. By 1629 Englishman George Monck had acquired 640 acres (240 hectares) of land here and named it Westover Plantation after his home county of Wiltshire, England. In 1685 Captain John Smith discovered a small stream near present day Poquoson called Kanawha River and named it James river after the British general James Wolfe who destroyed Fort Duquesne during the French and Indian War on July 4, 1755. At first this stream was thought to be a tributary of Kanawha River but later proved to be an intermittent branch off of James river which led explorers such as Robert Eustis down into what is nowPoquoson valley in search of goldfields during the early 1800s when Virginia became a state; these explorations are documented by General Order No.#5 from March 3rd 1821 ordering all surveyors appointed by Governor Fairfax “to make all necessary surveys for finding new sources of water for planting purposes” Included were General Order No.#6 from December 5th 1825 ordering Surveyor General Samuel Johnston “to lay out roads across Pocahontas Ind [sic] Valley between Elizabethtown [now Arlington]and Williamsburg [now Yorktown], so that navigation may be more easily practicable for traders” In 1777 John Poindexter erected a log cabin on Old Hickory Creek just upstream from present day Poquoson village site; this cabin served as the nucleus around which subsequent villages developed around it including Poquitoes (1781), Pawleys Corner (1783), Middle Point (1787), North Point (1801), East Point (1805) and eventually modern day Poquitoes Village/Townsite A post office called Potosi was established at this location on February 2nd 1814 under authority granted by then Governor Thomas Nelson Randolph Potosi continued operation until its closure on January 12th 1959 due to lack of mail service The first store built withinPoquitoes village boundaries date back to October 20th 1861 when Amos Hite opened up shop at 310 Main Street storefront known today as Peanut Hill Bakery This store would remain open until 1968 when consolidation within Prince William County led to its closing .
