Poquoson is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,123 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Loudoun Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1749 by Colonel George Washington and his family on land granted to them by King George II of Great Britain. Poquoson's first recorded white inhabitant was John Welsh who arrived in 1752. In 1759, Captain John Smith discovered the Potomac River and named it for Poquoson Plantation near modern-day Damascus, Maryland which he had visited earlier that year. In 1801, General James Hargrave occupied Poquoson Heights during the American Revolution and ordered all British forces from the area; this cleared the way for settlement of what would become Prince William County. The name Poquoson was chosen because a stream running through its center bore this same name in England. On July 4, 1848, voters ratified a local ordinance establishing a post office at Poquoson; it opened on October 12th that year. On December 2nd of that year (1848), General Ulysses S Grant anchored his steamer "HARP" at White House Point dock while visiting nearby Alexandria to celebrate America's centennial birthday and deliver supplies to Confederate forces besieging Richmond; as a result of this visit an agreement was made between General Grant and Governor Fairfax allowing free access for steamboats to Alexandria Harbor without fear of being boarded or searched by Confederate troops stationed thereabouts. The Post Office closed on November 30th 1951 due to changes in USPS policy which provided service only within one state per day - breaking with centuries-old practice of mailing items into many states simultaneously via mail wagon trains across country). However, correspondence continued to be handled using mail boxes until 1974 when PO Box numbers were introduced nationwide effective January 1st with no corresponding change in Postal Service regulations governing SFW box numbers... PO Box numbers will continue current usage until they are retired or superseded by new USPS snail mail designations/rules/instruments (e.g., “O” BOX number).
