Poquoson is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Frederick, MD–VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Poquoson's name means "place where two rivers meet." The town was first settled by English colonists in 1607 and was named for Sir George Poqueoune (1598–1650), an ancestor of the present-day Poquoson family. The first post office in Poquoson opened on December 12, 1859. It was renamed to its current name on February 6, 1883. In 1903, a cotton gin and other industrial facilities were built in the town by J.B. Pratt & Sons Company. The mills closed around 1960 and are now used as apartments or rural property values have increased significantly since then due to their proximity to Frederick and Washington DC area universities

Poquoson was founded in 1753 by Captain Benjamin Poquoson and his wife, Anne. The town's first permanent settler was James Frazier, who arrived in 1754. The early years of Poquoson were difficult due to the lack of food and other resources. However, Captain Poquoson persevered and built a small trading post in what is now the downtown area to help support his family. In 1814,Captain Poquoson donated land to the town for a public square and schoolhouse. By 1828,Poquoson had a population of 507 people. At that time,the only means of transportation within the town was boat traffic from Richmond across the James River. In 1851, Captain Poquoson donated land to build a new courthouse and jail which became known as "The courthouse on the square." The building still stands today and is used as an administrative center for local government. Over the years, many businesses have been located in or around this building including banks, law firms, health care clinics, stores and more. In 1938-39, Poquoson experienced its most serious flooding since records began being kept when flash floods swept through the area resulting in damage to many homes and businesses upstream from Poquoson Creek. This event led to increased development along creek bed south of Poquosons Landing because it provided more open space for business operations without fear of flooding again future times. Today much of that original business district remains intact with updated architecture typical of late 19th century VA towns even though it is well outside city limits!
