Poquoson is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,527 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1784 by Captain John Poquoson and his family. Piquoson is located on the Potomac River and is one of three towns along the river that are part of the Borough of Manassas. The town was originally named for Captain John Poquoson (1672-1754), an Englishman who had been captain of HMS "Amherst" during the American Revolution and then served as a justice of the peace in Prince George's County, Maryland. The name "Poquoson" derives from Powhatan Chief Quahogosh'poo, which means "the place where I found corn." Captain Poquoson's family settled at what is now Piquoson in 1784 and built a log cabin there. They were soon joined by other settlers, including brothers James and Thomas Keyes Poquoson and their wives Hannah and Sarah Keyes poquosonee. By 1800, most of Piquoson had been erected and some structures still stand today including the Episcopal parish building (1801), meeting house (1805), free black schoolhouse (1811), Presbyterian church (1814), post office (1815-1910) and sheriff's office building (1911). A few years later, brick buildings began to be erected with a gridiron plan around a square common yard. These buildings represented much of what remains today in PiquoonsVillage Center area - commercial strips with busy streets running through them that provideshadowy evidence of previous settlements dating back to pre-Revolutionary days when these blocks were just scattered fieldsteads. In 1828, Captains John O'Neal ('Norman') & George Ballard ('Bartlett') bought land north of present day Lawnside Drive between present day Third Street NW/Old Washington Road eastward to Muddy Creek; they laid out Ware Shoals which becamePoquosonal Park while continuing to operate as merchants on McNally Street NW cornering Old Washington Road; later this land became Alexandria Township under Commonwealth Act 1802 On 10 Apr 1861Ordinance No 9 Geo W Harrison created Alexandria Townsite within Alexandria Township limits giving it its start date On 12 Dec 1865 Union troops arrived at Drewry Ford across Muddy Creek fromPOQUOSONand burned all but 6 houses leaving no furniture or effects behind This event forever marked POQUOSONGEOGRAPHIC CENTER location
