The history of firearms in Poquoson, Virginia dates back to the early 1800s. Pistol and rifle manufacturers located in the town began producing firearms for local militias and hunting clubs. By 1825, Poquoson had become a center of arms manufacturing due to its location at the mouth of the Rappahannock River. The town's industry led to growth in population, so much so that by 1830, Poquon had reached its peak population size with over 1,000 residents. However, during the years following 1825-1830, there was a significant increase in gun violence and crime in Poquon due to increased traffic and trade along the river. This environment caused many firearm manufacturers to move their operations out ofPoquon and into more rural areas throughout Virginia. However, despite this shift away from Poquoson's firearms industry, there are still a number of preserved historic firearms located within the town boundaries. These include handguns manufactured by Colt Armory (now Colt Firearms) between 1865-1868; rifles made by Winchester Repeating Arms Company between 1866-1879; shotguns manufactured by Browning & Adams until 1903; cannons manufactured by John Brown & Sons between 1857-1859; and pistols handmade by David Pogue & Sons until 1907. Additionally, new gun shops have been opening up throughout Virginia since 2007 which are dedicated to restoring old firearms from across the state including Poquon. As a result of these efforts and continued growth withinPoquon itself, there is now an ever increasing inventory of historical firearms available for purchase or research purposes both inside and outside of the town limits."
