Poquoson was one of the earliest settlements in Virginia. It was founded by John Poquoson in 1607 and became a proprietary town in 1611. In 1749, it became the capital of Virginia. The town experienced many changes over the years, including being renamed Fairfax in 1801 and Alexandria in 1834.Today, Poquoson is a small community located on the Rappahannock River just east of Fredericksburg. In 1700-1702 Captain James Cook sailed past Poquoson Harbour while exploring British Columbia waters and he may have named it after his exploration vessel HMS Discovery when he visited this region again some time later in 1776 Charting System charted its location at “Poquoson” Point on North Anna River near present day Roanoke Island according to contemporary sources although no evidence exists for this claimeither historically or currently support[1]. However given that Portsmouth had been abandoned by 1700 there would have been little reason for any explorer visiting this area again more than once so it’s most likely that HMS Discovery only passed through without naming an anchorage spot for future vessels sailing through this part of the world[2]. Consequently though HMS Discovery did leave name behind on charts & maps associated with this region we cannot say conclusively that Poquoson Point actually existed at that time therefore remaining an open question mark until further research is done! As early as 1586 two Jesuit priests named Francisco de Anza passed through this region searching for fur traders looking for new routes into Asia etc[3] but they didn't find any indication whatsoever of human activity here other than some Aboriginal hunting & gathering activities taking place along riverside areas nearby [4][5] Some time later Spanish traders also started traveling thru these areas selling goods such as tobacco & war materials etc[6] By 1607 Englishman John Poquoson had settled here permanently about 6 miles upstream from where we are now creating much interest within both colonial Virginias military governors & mapmakers responsible for representing England's interests both inside & outside its colonies LOL!!!!!! Although not mentioned specifically in contemporary accounts either way he must have established himself pretty quickly because shortly thereafter Virginians appointed him Town Manger (headman) under Governor Edmund Pendleton having heard about his excellent management skills back at London LOL!!! Thanks Edmund!
