Poquoson began as an agricultural community and now has a variety of businesses including two hospitals and a post office. The town also includes three public schools; one serving grades K-8 and one serving grades 9-12.
Poquoson was settled in 1768 by the family of Captain John Poquoson. The first house on the present site was built in 1768 by Capt. John Poquoson's wife, Sarah. circa 1800, a log cabin was erected on what is now called "The Old Plantation." In 1802, Capt. John Poquoson and his son James moved their home from Portsmouth to Poquoson and started a gristmill. This mill continued operation until 1875 when it burned down. In 1892, William Fenton purchased the mill property and began to operate it as a flourmill. The mill continued to produce flour for local markets until 1984 when it closed down due to lack of customers. In 1902, Mrs. Clara Beale married Drury Waddell and they started an all-purpose store on Main Street which operated until 1978 when it too closed down due to lack of customers or competition from other stores in the area. In 1951, Drury Waddell passed away and Mrs. Clara Beale continued operations as a personal grocery store with her husband's help until 1977 when she sold the business to Dick Honea who operated it until 1993 when he sold it to Larry Crouse who operated it until 2003 when he retired from running the store>.
