Poquoson, Virginia is a small town in Prince William County, Virginia. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Loudoun County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1786 by Captain John Poquoson and his wife Susannah Caldwell Poquoson. The current name for Poquoson is derived from Sir Thomas Percy's "Anglia" which means "land of the pooches." The first settlers were farmers and their families who farmed land around what is now Poquoson until 1811 when they bought some of the original grants from Captain John Poquoson’s father-in-law, George Washington. They built homes on present day Fourth Street and Market Street. In 1851, Isaac Beal purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of present day Poquoson fromCaptain John Poquoson’s son-in-law Nicholas Hargrave Candler. He began to settle his family there in 1852 and named the new village Candlerville after himself and his wife Esther Beal Candler. The history of Poquoson is full of milestones such as its incorporation as an independent city, where it reached its peak population size; World War II; and the creation of the University at Harrisonburg which now employs over 1,000 people. One interesting fact about Poquoson is that it has been home to three Presidents of Virginia – James K Polk (1845-1909), Franklin D Roosevelt (1933-1945) and Harry S Truman (1945-1953).
Poquoson was once a thriving town in central Virginia. It is now a small, dusty community located just outside of Richmond. The town dates back to the early 1800s and was originally called "New Kent." In 1807, Governor James K. Polk issued an executive order creating Poquoson as a census-designated place. It became a part of the newly formed Commonwealth of Virginia in 1829.
