Many of the businesses in Poquoson are family-owned or operated by descendants of those who began operations here more than 200 years ago. In addition to subsistence farming activities such as raising chickens and bees for their own eggs or honey; fishing; hunting; trapping; gardening; quarrying; logging; and manufacturing goods such as cars and appliances, Poquoson has also become an important transportation hub for farmers throughout central Virginia due to its location near both Winchester (the county seat) and Norfolk (the state capital).

In 1814, Captain John Poquoson died and his son became the first permanent resident of Poquoson. By 1865, all of Virginia had been acquired by the United States and Poquoson become an independent town under the jurisdiction of Norfolk County. As part of this process, it lost its status as a town to Chesapeake Bay City when that city was established in 1938. Until recently, there was no public school inPoquoson. However, starting in fall 2009, students in grades K-12 have been using The Academy which is located on Church Street between High School and Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Pope's Landing in Poquoson was a small tidal island located on the Potomac River in Virginia. The island was first settled by English colonists in 1607. The settlement became known as Pope's Landing after the then-Viceroy of India, Thomas Cromwell, granted land to Francis Bacon and other Englishmen for their settlement.
