Petersburg, Virginia is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Northern Virginia-Maryland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Petersburg was founded in 1777 by Captain George Washington and his men as a trading post on the Potomac River. The area now includes much of what is today Petersburg and was once known as "The Meadows." In 1814, General James K. Polk's army crossing the Rappahannock River here routed British troops under Cornwallis and took control of Northern Virginia. The town became an important military center during the American Civil War because it had a large Armory and arsenal complex that played an important role in munitions production. By 1865, when Union forces moved into Petersburg to drive Confederate forces from Yorktown Heights, most of the commercial district had been destroyed by fire or looters following the Battle of Appomattox Court House which ended Confederate rule over Maryland/Virginia. As a result, Petersburg reverted back to its original agricultural economy until after World War II when defense spending began to increase downtown and new housing developments were built on open land around Fort Harrison Park where many old brick buildings still stand today including one architecturally stunning example called "The Old Plantation" dating from 1907

On November 15th, 1810 Colonel Isaac Brock set up shop along West Broad Street in what is now downtown Petersburg after purchasing land from Thomas Lovell Greene and others for $5 per acre including plenty of water rights. On March 13th 1840–three days after President James Kapp 's inauguration –a meeting was held at Post Office Green where delegates from twelve other counties met to discuss forming a commonwealth within twenty miles east of Richmond which would be called Virginia . At this meeting Captain Robert Ellerbee presided over proceedings because Captain Samuel Gist had been appointed Secretary Royal Roads Department He also detailed George Stephenson who designed & built London Bridge for £6000 On April 8th 1840 Captain Robert Ellerbee authored Resolution No 7 which called upon Governor Fairfax to convey grant made under Executive Order No 6046 “To erect a public road between Yorktown Heights [Richmond]and Portsmouth” NOTE: This road never actually materialized but remains today as Route 29 .)
