Petersburg has been inhabited by humans since at least 7500 BC. In 1758, the area that now includes Petersburg was part of Culpeper County. It was renamed Pulaski County in 1796 after General John Forbes Pulaski, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War. On January 13, 1814, during the Mexican–American War, General James Kinois led a force of Confederate cavalry through Petersburg on their way to Yorktown Peninsula and Battle of Gettysburg (where they were victorious). In 1865, during the American Civil War The Battle of Appomattox Court House took place here when Union General George Biddle attacked Confederate General Robert Ewell's army under Governor Wise. Biddle lost heavily but his men retreated rather than lose face before civilians and Union soldiers alike. This battle is also known as "The Great Retreat". After the war ended in 1865, many Confederate veterans moved to Richmond so that they could start over again; however some chose to stay and build new homes in what is now Petersburg. In 1870s two major trainroads crossed through Petersburg: US 1 which ran south from Norfolk east to Lynchburg then north to Richmond then west back to Norfolk; and US 12 which ran northwest from Lynchburg east to Roanoke Island then north along I-95 until it joined I-64 near Lynchburg; this made it possible for businesses in Petersburg (and parts of Roanoke Island) to grow rapidly without havingto leave their neighborhoods or go downriver for commerce In 1892 construction began on Petersburg's first high school named after William Gaston Smith – one hundred years after he had built Gaston High School in nearby Georgetown – followed by another school building project two years later (this time named for Alfred Ewing). These schools helped spur development around them with people moving into newly built homes or starting businesses on acreage formerly used for agriculture or forestry In 1915 Abraham Lincoln Elementary School opened its doors in downtown Petersburg; this was only one step in creating an educational community within easy walking distance of most residents while still preserving rural lifestyle . By 1924 there were 16 elementary schools statewide with similar programs available within minutes' walk . A separate branch library system developed soon after providing access to books, periodicals and other academic resources off campus . As more families migrated into downtown Portsmouth during World War II there was an increase demand for housing stock as well as jobs available across all sectors including naval stores employment centers ; this created unprecedented demand for land surrounding downtown Portsmouth making developers very interested in purchasing properties once vacated by veteran families However because no single developer wanted all of southeast Portsmouth these properties became hard sells ; eventually most property went unoccupied over time leaving much valuable land undeveloped . Today few if any buildings remain standing from those original school buildings although Downtown Pavilion remains active thanks largely to donations from descendants of military members who lived there during wartime

After years of construction and growth, Petersburg reached its peak population in 1870 with over 120,000 inhabitants. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Petersburg was sacked by Confederate forces and lost most of its residents. The city eventually recovered and began to grow again in the late 19th century but experienced aDecline during World War II (1939-1945). Since then, it has slowly regained muchof its population and infrastructure however it still remains an important cultural center in Northern Virginia
