In 1836, Petersburg annexed nearby Alexandria due to political rivalry between these cities over land ownership claims within Prince George's County - Alexander Petrovich Alkaliyev had acquired what would later be known as Arlington Heights from Fairfax Manor following his purchase of much land east of Washington D.C., including Friendship Heights and parts of today's Silver Spring neighborhood from Nicholas Nickerson In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived in Petersburg with 1,200 soldiers for an attempt to besieged Fortress Monroe; he failed when Union troops drove him out southward along with most of his army less than two weeks later during Battle Of Suffolk Court House near Manassas Junction After their defeat at Suffolk Court House, Confederate forces retreated back into Richmond and Crown Point before finally withdrawing completely across Northern Virginia on April 9th 1865 On May 10th 1865 local resident Colonel Augustus Wofford located remains belonging to Confederate general Robert Ewell inside Fort Monroe which led Governor Frederick Mifflin order all possible attention be given to finding him prior to any public ceremonies taking place related to Ewell's burial There has been much speculation surrounding where exactly Colonel Wofford found human remains however no definitive evidence exists that supports such assertions
