The Battle of Petersburg took place on April 12, 1864, during the American Civil War. Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army fought a series of engagements against Union General Ulysses S. Grant and his forces at the town of Petersburg, Virginia. In the first engagement, Confederate forces attacked an Union garrison under the command of Brigadier General John Pemberton. The attack was repulsed with heavy losses for both sides; however, Pemberton ordered a renewed assault that resulted in a Union victory and the capture of several cannons by Confederates. In the second engagement, Confederate forces attacked an Union line near Battery Wagner while artillery bombardments were ongoing in order to delay or prevent reinforcement from arriving from Grant's army. The battle began with Confederate casualties high but soon became one of the bloodiest on record as Union shells struck walls and killed or wounded many Confederates including Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet who later served as Generals Joseph Johnston and Robert E. Lee's successor at Gettysburg Mountain Battlefield Campaign
Petersburg, Virginia is a small town in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The population was 3,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fairfax County. Petersburg was founded in 1755 by Captain John Smith as a trading post on an arm of the James River. The present-day town was named for Prince Augustus Frederick of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, husband of Victoria Principal, Duke of York and Albany (later King George IV). The first permanent settlers were two families who arrived in 1756: the Pattons and the Hardings. Many more came over time, mainly from England and Scotland because there were no open land grants available to them in Virginia. By 1800, Petersburg had a population of 10 healthy white men and 300 Indian traders living with their slaves. In 1802 Russian Admiral Alexei Pushkin established an artificial island just off shore to serve as his summer headquarters while he toured America. This event helped start American settlement along the Potomac River corridor. In 1814 General Robert Ewell invaded Washington D C during the War between Napoleon Bonaparte and Andrew Jackson to capture it for France; when Ewell learned that Confederate General Jubal Early was advancing upriver he ordered his army to cross overland instead which resulted in many casualties including Ewell himself As demand for goods increased from war effort economic development followed with new churches being built such as Trinity Episcopal Church erected in 1865 followed by several shopping malls developing around this time like Southern Tobacco Plaza which opened in 1957 about 2 miles west of downtown Petersburg QVC also started opening up shop here back then called Peninsula Mall before settling down into what is now known as One Stop mall which opened up in 1984 near where Interstate 95 meets US Route 64 . There have been several fires starting within these boundaries over time but they have all been contained or extinguished without any loss or damage
