Petersburg is a town in Loudoun County, Virginia. The population was 34,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Loudoun County and the second largest town in Virginia after Charlottesville. Petersburg was founded in 1792 by Captain John Smith as a trading post on the James River. In 1812, it became an incorporated town under the name of Alexandria. In 1829, Petersburg amalgamated with Fairfax and Winchester to form what is now Loudoun County. The first courthouse in Petersburg was built in 1829 and served as the county seat until 1865 when Alexandria assumed that role. For many years, Petersburg was one of the leading agricultural towns in Virginia because its ample 7 miles (11 km) of riverfront provided good land for farming and hunting; today, however, its economy has largely dissipated due to declines in shipping traffic on the James River and heavy development around it since then. The present-day downtown area of Petersburg originated as far back as 1792 when Captain John Smith established his trading post at what is now known as Point Lookout on James River near modern day Arlington Cemetery. At first, only seasoned traders lived there; most workers were recruited from nearby farms or villages who brought their crops and livestock along for transportation across the river to be sold here or exchanged with others on board ships coming upriver every week or so during those early days of trade on both sides of this great waterway. Eventually some merchants grew rich enough to build Mansion House Heights which overlooked much of downtown during summertime while they enjoyed their private fireside chats before departure for their various business ventures out into adjacent rural areas where tobacco production continued even into very recent times One can still journey down old Boardwalk Road through plantations dating back well into pre-Revolutionary era just past Old Richmond Station off I-64 just south of Colonial Drive ) –> This once bustling commercial district has been replaced by officesites/illegal housing developments surrounding large shopping centers with Interstate access providing limited pedestrian access except for a few select locations along busy arterial streets which have seen more retail development over time including: Piney Woods Shopping Center located adjacent to US 11 eastbound within walking distance from many restaurants including KFC next door [and open 24 hours], Regency Cinemas several blocks north across I-66 from doormen wearing red jackets welcoming customers inside–>this too has become an extremely undesirable location given its lack privacy away from all but select employees/clients inside numerous high end stores neighboring dozens if not hundreds if not thousands of cars parking across several acres especially near I- 64 exits), grand Hyatt hotel less than 1 mile southeast off I- 66 just minutes’ walk away), Marshall Fields store less than 2 blocks northeast off I- 66 also just minutes’ walk away). Even today one can find remnants such as small grocery stores clustered together along busy intersections near major thoroughfares) making it difficult if not impossible to get lost even among these older buildings without prior knowledge).

In 1809–1810, during Napoléon Bonaparte's rule over Europe, Petersburg became an important commercial center due to its location on the waterways connecting Europe with Asia and North America. Many famous people were born or died here including Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837), Ivan Turgenev (1812-1883), Leo Tolstoy (1828-1914), Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1900), Nikolai Gogol (1795-1848) and Petr Lermontov (1797-182118). During World War I, military training camps were set up here throughout eastern Maryland such as Camp Peary which attracted thousands of men from all over the country looking for an opportunity to fight against Germany and Austria before becoming citizens of America once war began officially on April 6th 1914 The city also played an important role during World War II with several construction projects being completed such as building deep water docks just upstream from where today's Anacostia Bridge crosses over Potomac River
Petersburg, Virginia was founded in 1755 as a small village on the Potomac River. In 1801, it became the capital of the Confederate States of America and was also the site of one of the bloodiest battles in American history, the Battle of Petersburg.
