The last barrel factory in Petersburg closed its doors in 1865. This leaves Petersburg with only shotguns as its primary sources for Cannonballs today!

When George Washington wascaptured by British forces at Yorktown during the War for Independence in 1781, his unit became known as "George Washington's Company" and continued to use that name until 1800 when it changed its name to "Petersburg". However, even before this event, Petersburg had started to form around people who were associated with it: men like John Adams and James Knyphausen who had fled London after the Stamp Act went into effect; women like Sarah Howe; and children such as John Quincy Adams Jr.. By 1802, there were enough people living hereabouts that a meeting was called to try to create a government for them all under one roof. This failed but led eventually to incorporation as a town on December 12th of that year. During its first few years as a village-town development occurred mainly through merchant vessels which unloaded goods onshore at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where later buildings were erected including barracks for soldiers garrisoned here during World War II. During these years local businesses included two general stores open 24/7 total (one operated by Eager Brothers Ferry Company), two blacksmiths licensed since 1778 (the first whitesmith in VA), bakeries (Taylor & Cooks), several carpenters unions licensed since 1793 (later replaced by subscription mechanics associations within each industry), three physicians practicing medicine out-of-hours under charters issued from Prince William County Board of Health; one school - also operated out-of-hours by subscription teachers; post office opened January 1st 1807 with six letters serviceable daily - four Sundays per month operation commenced May 1st 1809 with one letter per day serviceable ; steamboat channel extending across creek leading upriver power converted Charleston & Norfolk RR train tracks into streetcars running twicedaily between buildings near Navy Yard & Government House passenger terminal dock area served primarily by newly built electric streetcar lines [today buses run down these same tracks]. A large waterwheel – used for grinding flour – stood unattended on property adjoining present day Dutch Reformed Church until sold August 15th 1862 To JB Patterson plc., Tax Collector for Prince William County
