In 1775, it was the capital of the British America and served as the seat of government for over two centuries. It was destroyed by fire in 1814 and again by natural disaster in 1865. Petersburg has since recovered and is now a thriving community with a rich history. In 1775, when American forces landed on Jamestown Island to fight for independence from Great Britain, Petersburg was one of the towns chosen to serve as the capital of British America. The town site had been selected because it was close to major military installations and could support an extended period of operations without becoming overwhelmed by population growth. The capital designation lasted until 1814 when London moved its government to New York City after achieving independence from Great Britain that year. Petersburg first experienced significant destruction during the Revolutionary War (1774-1783). The Battles of Saratoga (July 2-5, 1777) and Yorktown (April 14-18 Morristown), which resulted in more than 50% loss of life for both sides, damaged or destroyed most of downtown Petersburg and nearly all infrastructure including schools, churches, hospitals and factories. Aftermath assessments concluded that “the Town [was] almost entirely consumed with Fire” due primarily to shellfire from British cannons stationed on Fort Lee across James River Valley; however arson also played a role in some notable fires throughout late winter/early spring.[1] One estimate puts total losses at $6400-$10400 with approximately 1/3rd lost due to fire alone while other 3/4ths were lost through both damage & theft from remaining buildings not consumed by fire.[2][3] By September 1800 only 10%of buildings still standing remained following multiple years of destruction caused by British cannonball & gunfire[4][5] While many people relocated outlying residences had already been abandoned or burned down during King George's War several years earlier – Kingston's selection as new capital raised eyebrows among local politicians who saw no need for another city within commuting distance of major military engagements; this prompted debate between Governor John Adams & LtGen Robert Erskine about whether or not Richmond should be made Home District #1 instead[6][7][8]. By October 1800 just 6 months later only 4%of structures remain standing; these included courthouse building which collapsed shortly after erection[9][10]; few buildings survived into early 19th century due chiefly to lack of replacement parts available pre-war[11]. Despite large loss during Revolution Petersburgh rebuilt quickly using borrowed money & locally sourced materials although much effort went into fashioning Georgian style brick homes rather than Federal architecture favored by many colonists who saw early American culture as inferior[12].
