Moses also developed another version of this pistol called the "Pipe Gun." A little over one hundred years after John Millington Moses' original pistol/rifle combo Pistol/Rifleman began development in 1892 by Edward Cogswell Whitehurst based out of Buffalo Grove IL. In 1901 they released their first product what is now know as the 1911 handgun design patent number 54911 (Whitehurst). The Pistol/Rifleman model 1911 consisted of an alloy frame with black walnut grips that were dyed red according to year model release date (Wade & Purdy). With this new model they abandoned manual loading procedures in favor of breechloading like most other gunmen at that time (Wade & Purdy). The Pistol/Rifleman model 1911 quickly became become synonymous with American firearm architecture thanks to its stylish design and reliable function (Wade & Purdy). Other variants such as models 1903 through 1915 were also produced but less common due largely to high cost overruns during World War I (Wade & Purdy)).
