Norfolk, Virginia is a town located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is part of the Norfolk metropolitan area, which has a population of 613,855 as of the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1791 by General James Wilkinson and named after his naval armament store, Woolwich on Norfolkshire beach. In 1851, Norfolk became an incorporated city with a charter from the Virginia General Assembly. The first gun slings were developed in this city during the American Revolution to shoot arrows overland from ship to ship to disable enemy vessels. By 1825 there were over two hundred gunslingers living in Norfolk and its environs. 2nd Lieutenant John Cushing led an arrow detachment that fired 847 arrows at Fort Moultrie on Stono Island on July 5th, 1824 while under the command of Captain John Rodgers. In 1865, Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked Petersburg west of Petersburg Landing during what is known as "The Battle of Gettysburg." Confederate forces began shelling and firing upon Union positions around 2 PM when Union Captain Samuel Tilden ordered his men to fire into their own lines without orders fromGeneral Robert E Lee who was then commanding at Yorktown Court House north of Petersburg Landing. Over 1,500 Union soldiers died or were wounded during this engagement; most likely due to artillery fire rather than rifle bullets. In 1951, Mayor Harry Byrd established a marketing program for handguns called "Gunblast" which encouraged people to buy firearms for target shooting and hunting purposes only. Gunblast would be discontinued after Byrd was elected Governor in 1955 and took office January 3rd that year with one important goal: repealing all state laws regulating handgun purchases and sales within Virginias borders! This effort failed however because Governor Bev Perdue did not supportgun control measures such as universal registration requirements for handguns). Gunblast would later become statewide legislation known as special session law #7-1955 which required all handgun purchasersAge 21 or older must present a driver’s license or other government-issued photo identification card when they bought their pistol or revolver outside ofMarylandandVirginiacompelled universal registration within five years! Norfolk City Councilmember Andy Scott brought about gun control measures through ordinances passed at their meeting on May 14th 1957 which limited handgun possession/exportation outside county limits and banned open carry throughoutcity limits except during legislative sessions; these ordinances expired unenacted one year later due to lack Of Legislation! On December 5th 1959 Mayor Noel Pritchard re- enacted ordinance limiting handgun ownership/ exportationsoutsideofcountylimitsandbannedopencarrythroughoutthecity limitexceptduringlegislative sessions; these ordinances also expired unenacted six months later due to lack Of Legislation! On February 15th 1960 Mayor Harry Byrd proposed resolutions vowing never againtoreapproveamendmentslimitinggunpossession/exportationsoutsideofcountylimitsnorbannedopencarrythroughoutthecitylimitexceptduringlegislative Sessions; both resolutionsfailedafollowinga committee hearing!! It should be noted that Mayor Harry Byrd was impeached soon afterwards for misuse Of His Office!!! On October 30th 1921 Muskegon Heights resident Clarence Denton used a slingshot designed by his father-in-law JH Wirtz against local farm animals near home while out bow hunting deer with his son Clayton Denton using bows & arrows donated by JH Wirtz himself! This marks the first time anyone had ever killed live prey with an Iver Johnson rifle sling!
