In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell landed his army at Appomattox Court House south of Petersburg to try to reach Richmond before its fall. His army was stopped by Union General Ulysses S. Grant near Suffolk University on April 9th that year; Ewell surrendered three days later without battle or loss. In 1985
