From then on, it became customary for different individuals or groups to nominate certain portraits or local heroes as firearm ambassadors. These individuals would then design shirts with these newly chosen images on them. As time went on, more and more people joined this tradition - including some of Norfolk's most prominent business leaders and politicians. As Norfolk grew increasingly industrialized during World War II (1939-1945), employment opportunities improved with new production plants built at Smithfield Foods Inc., Litton Industries Inc., General Electric Co., Chrysler Corporation and other companies located in downtown or near surrounding neighborhoods such as Midtown Center and East End Neighborhoods
