However, this changed with the arrival of the railroad in the early 20th century and Norfolk became known as the "city of trains." The city hosted a large number of industrial plants during World War II and after the war there was growth in light manufacturing and tourism. In recent years there has been growth in professional services such as health care and education. The city is located on the Peninsula Campaign Trail which leads from Williamsburg to Petersburg.

As of 2010, Norfolk had a population of 231,554 and is the second-largest city in Hampton Roads after Portsmouth. The history of Norfolk goes back to at least 825 AD when it was part of the Kingdom of East Anglia. In 1692, King James I granted a charter to create an Episcopal Church in what is now downtown Norfolk. In 1836, Norfolk became an incorporated town and joined the United States as a state in 1785. The city's economy has been based largely on agriculture until recently; however, there has been significant investment in several sectors including engineering and information technology since 2000. The first European settler arrived in what is now Norfolk in 1624 with John Smith who named it "Norfolk Plantation". He built his own house and caretaker's cottage which he called "Mile End", near modern day Newport News Shipbuilding Company where he later died. At that time there were only about 20 English people living permanently in what is now Norfolk County and most residents came from England or Scotland via boat or ship along the Elizabeth River. The first permanent European settlement was made by Peter Martyr (1547-1626) who landed at Macton on Christmas Day 1588/9 with his family and claimed land east of present day Norwich for England as part of a religious Settlement known as Jamestown Colony. However, this too failed due to piracy from Spanish pirates off the coast around hereabouts and early settlers had to content themselves with hunting small game such as deer, rabbit, Squirrels etc., rather than farming maize or wheat crops like their British counterparts did ashore elsewhere on Long Island Sound. By 1634 all but two outposts were abandoned because either Native Americans attacked them or difficulties obtaining foodstuffs caused by high salt levels led some colonists to return home before long! By 1700 only six families lived permanently outside Jamestown colony – these seven families eventually moved back into Jamestown following Indian attacks which seems likely due to overpopulation by these English Protestants! In 1786 Daniel Boone discovered new areas richly endowed with coal seams near modern day Petersburg while exploring western Virginia for mineral rights under contract from George Washington (1732-1800). This led directly to increased interest throughout much Virginian farmland during this period not just for coal but also lead & zinc ore being prospected more extensively across central VA & Susquehanna Valley then hitherto known!
