Newport News is a city in Virginia and the county seat of Nansemond County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 87,utable. The area that would become Newport News was first settled by Native Americans in 1607. In 1734, John Carter founded what became known as Carter's Landing on James River to provide a market for goods brought down the river from Williamsburg. When Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865, most of Richmond followed suit and the town ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality. However, because it lay within Fairfax County until 1959 and because its ZIP code includes parts of both Prince George's County and Loudoun County (the two adjacent counties which make up Northern Virginia), Newport News has continued to maintain some degree of civic life despite its lack of municipal status. Since 2003, Mayor Kenneth Capps has championed a referendum for annexation into Prince George's County so that Newport News could join other jurisdictions there with similarpopulation densities such as Alexandria and Falls Church. A victory over opposition in November 2009 will allow annexation by Prince George's County but still requires approval from the City Council. Newport News is located at 38°48′N 76°06′W / 38; -76; -86 W。 According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12 square miles (30 km²), all land. It lies on James River between Gloucester Point on the east bank and Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on the west bank—two points where Norfolk Southern Railway once connected Richmond with Petersburg and Suffolk townships across transportation routes then separate those areas today before rejoining Petersburg/Suffolk along Route 1 southward near New Market Airport). As recently as 1881, it was part of Albemarle Parish but united with Nansemond Parish when Albemarle parish boundaries were redrawn following cession by King William III during his War for Independence campaign against Crown Prince Charles II . Newport News, Virginia is a city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 126,851 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The Norfolk Southern Railway and Norfolk Southern Railway line runs through Newport News. The first post office in Newport News was established on December 6, 1831. On July 1, 1871, the city became an independent municipality under the name of Newport News Cityhood Act No. 542. The history of Newport News can be traced back to 1724 when Captain John Smith and his group of Englishmen explored what is now Portsmouth County in southeastern Virginia during their extended search for a new home for their colony of Jamestown. After finding no suitable site they returned to England and reported their findings to King George II who commissioned them to explore these new lands further. Captain John Smith's expedition discovered evidence that there was land beyond what he had seen while exploring Jamestown which led him to believe that he may have found Elkhorn Island off the coast of modern day Portsmouth County when he landed on Moneta Shoals on February 14, 1725 with his small party consisting of twenty men and two boats). He named this newly discovered land "Newport" after himself and set about strengthening defenses against potential French or Spanish attackers as well as farming it (although most likely little did he know that this would be his final landfall). In 1728 Captain James Cook sailed into Chesapeake Bay and sighted Mount Vernon from where he could observe British colonies down south including Rhode Island (now Providence) as well as Cape Henry near today's Elizabeth City Naval Base before sailing northward along tidal Long Island Sound until reaching New York Harbor on September 7th . Cook then sailed northeastward along present-day Eastern Shore before finally landing at Staten Island Ferry Landing on October 12th . Upon disembarking his ships additional supplies were brought ashore including cannons which were later used by American forces during the American Revolution On July 4th , 1735, settlers from Caroline County arrived at Point Comfort aboard HMS Roebuck after being shipwrecked off North Carolina coast following a hurricaneCategory storm known locally as Hurricane Navidad which struck early morning August 26th . They built Fort Prince Edward within a day using materials salvaged from nearby vessels including hatches and masts/mastset from HMS Grafton which also suffered damage including loss of headland - one such example being part now known as Fort Anne Convict Barracks located directly across Lee Highway from Navy Yard Historic District This initial foray into colonial America set the stage for later development with more permanent settlements being established throughout what is now Hampton Roads over time culminating with incorporation into Virginia by an act passed by General Assembly on January 10th , 1861 resulting in its current name: Newport News City Government
Newport News was founded in 1749 by Captain John Smith as a trading post on the Moneta River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1798 it became an incorporated city. In 1860, the Union Army burned Newport News to the ground during the Battle of Gettysburg and it reemerged as a industrial center after Reconstruction. Newport News experienced another growth spurt in the late 20th century, with industry growing particularly in shipbuilding and plastics. However, economic decline began to take hold in the early 21st century and has persisted throughout much of that century.
