In 1859, a group of men from Newport News formed the "National Rifle Association" in order to protect the rights of gun owners. In 1970, it merged withNorfolk County to form Monmouth County. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Newport News were Dutch traders who sailed upriver from Roanoke Island early in 1600s looking for new land to colonize. By 1692, English settlers had established themselves on Princess Anne Island adjacent to present day Newport News while trading with the Native Americans nearby. A smallpox pandemic that hit England hard during this time caused many deaths among British settlers so Governor John Smith ordered his troops not enter into any open hostilities but instead build Fort Prince George near present day Portsmouth instead which served as their training ground for future wars against Native Americans In 1871, when Norfolk County became separate from Norfolk City we also lost our right to call ourselves "Norfolk." However because our merchants & citizens did such great things for us thruout this time period we regained that right by merging back into Monmouth County! A major shipbuilding boom took place during World War II due to America's need for ships needed for war effort overseas including HMS Normandy (CVE-5), USS Yorktown (CV-14), USS Langley (CV-2) and USS Independence (BB-24). Over 45% of all naval vessel built during World War II was produced here at Point Lookout Shipyard including battleships like Yorktown and CVE-5; cruisers like Langley; destroyers like Independence; submarines like Nagato; torpedoes like Wahoo; minesweepers like Pueblo; ocean liners such asAlaskaand Pearl Harbor! Today there are over 20 businesses employing more than 1000 people directly or indirectly within Newport News economy including several large technology companies such as Microsoft Azure(ASX: MSFT), Amazon Web Services(AWS), IBM Corp., Dell Inc., Google parent company Alphabet Inc.(GOOGL) among others The Plymouth Naval Air Station was opened by President Franklin D Roosevelt on December 12th 1942 following his directive giving American citizenship to Japanese aliens living aboard two USA warships captured earlier that year while under Japanese occupation. The airfield would play an important role throughout World War II providing support to Allied forces fighting Axis Germany across North Africa, Europe and Asia . Although closed down by 1966 due largely to budget cuts initiated by US Defense Secretary Robert McNamara , it reopened again under control of the Navy Department's Military Aerospace Command (MACOM) on January 1st 1977 after being mothballed since October 1973 . On September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks occurred leaving much devastation throughout New England resulting in MACOM taking command responsibility from DoD Headquarters immediately aftermath liftoff ..... Today NAS Antietam provides civil airport operations serving approximately 100 aircraft per day utilizing 14 runway options ......
