This led tothe founding of Norfolk County in 1822 and Newport News annexed it two years later.* By 1830, parts of Portsmouth had become too noisy for farming families living near Petersburg to keep up with developments there; they relocated northward tocreate what is today known as Blacksburg.* Commodore James Ketchum* decided that Newport NEWS should have its own courthouse rather than share facilities with nearby Petersburg; Accordingly, on May 14th., 1830a new courthouse was dedicated at cornerof Broadwalk Ave./Portsmouth Rd.* The first Africans slaves owned or worked within Yankeesville were those who labored aboard HMS Ark Royal*, which stopped at Hampton Roads en route from Africa on October 12th., 1800†††† under Captains Richard Fenton (owner), Edward Dunmore (captain) & William Byrd (master). Negroes working aboard Ark Royal were Alexander McGillivray*, Thomas Moultrie (owner), John Taylor*& Isaac Watts*††*. One hundred percent black laborers manned all eight cannon ships *owned or operated by U S Navy during Revolutionary War‡‡§§§††……….
