There is no one answer to this question as guns have been in Newport News, Virginia since the 1700s. However, some of the earliest firearms in Newport News were pistols and rifles. These early firearms were made from flint or other hardwood materials and used simple sights that consisted of a small aperture within the barrel through which the user could see what he was shooting at. One of the first known rifle manufacturers in Newport News was John Fenton. He started making rifle ammunition back in 1792 and soon began selling his products to local militaries around Virginia. In 1811, Fenton also founded The Rifle & Pistol Club of America (RPCA) in Newport News to promote gun ownership and hunting among its members. RPCA played an important role in preserving both gun rights and Second Amendment traditions throughout Virginia until the 1990s. In 1834, Captain James Gadsden erected a large brick building on Church Street called Gadsden's Arsenal for use as a military arsenal by the Confederate States of America (CSA). This armory served as a major source of munitions for Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After the war ended, Gadsden's Arsenal reverted back to civilian control and it slowly lost its importance over time. However, it still remains significant today as a museum located inside Fort Monroe National Monument. Gun sights continued to be popular throughout much of nineteenth century America because they allowed users to shoot accurately at targets without having to take their eyes off target for very long periods of time. Newport News was founded in 1692 by James Ogle and his wife, Susanna. The town was named for the Isle of Wight, which was then a part of England. In 1712, John Montresor bought 12 acres of land within Newport News and built a mill on it. By 1800, the population of Newport News had grown to over 1,000 people. In 1802, the U.S. Congress passed an act supporting the Presbytery of Virginia and moved the seat of government from Williamsburg to Newport News. In 1811, Commodore John Catesby attacked Norfolk while transporting troops to fight in Mexico City; as a result, Newport News became one of the most important seaports on the northeastern coast during this time period. The city grew rapidly during this time and by 1828 had reached its peak with a population of 914 people. However, by 1830s growth had slowed due to economic conditions and competition from larger cities such as Richmond and Norfolk
