Newport News, Virginia is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, located in King and Queen County. The population was 26,857 at the 2010 census. The town has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. It became part of the United States on July 4, 1776. In 1871 Newport News annexed land from Hampton Roads to form its own city government. On December 15, 1920 Newport News annexed land from Norfolk to form its own city government again. In 1966 Newport News annexed land from Petersburg to form its own city government once again. The town was founded by English colonists in 1624 as Southampton upon George's River after they abandoned Jamestown and moved up the James River to found their new colony there. They named it "Newport" for John Cabot, an Italian explorer who had helped them find their way there and map their route through the area before sailing home with news of Christopher Columbus' landfall on November 14, 1492 near present-day Portsmouth Naval Shipyard east of where Newport News sits today. The first permanent settler arrived in 1627 and named his community "Norfolk." In 1776, when American independence was declared, many Virginians followed General George Washington into battle against British forces during the American Revolution. Many people who were living in Southampton or nearby Portsmouth left to join the fight and some even went as far as Maryland or Pennsylvania because they felt it necessary to fight for what they believed was right rather than be subject to British rule. One group of Virginians who decided to stay put were those who owned slaves and decided that owning property within enemy territory wasn't an option so they set up homes along Fishing Creek instead where they continued growing tobacco until white men came looking for it several times during the war (1775-83). By 1781 most of these plantations had been destroyed by disease or warfare but some still thrived allowing small groups of black Africans known as AfricanAmericans (also called planters) access to education and work opportunities which would laterallow themto gain political power under Reconstruction following Reconstruction itself (1865-77). When America gained independence on July 4th 1776 many residents chose not to leave like so many others did before them because freedom was something that truly mattered to them now that they were free from British rule. Many businesses such as Nicholas Principle Tobacco Company began trading products back East while other businesses such as Hardware store started making items needed back home like cheesecloth and thread etc.. With less reliance on Great Britain things began becoming more convenient for locals including being able to get food delivery directly from local farms just like back home! Although transportation wasn't perfect at this point goods could only be transported by boat down river which made getting around difficult especially if goods couldn't be unloaded quickly due possible flooding downstream caused by heavy rainsstorms etc.. This lack of easy access keeps oneginers/landers here today! The towns growth can be credited mainly with its leaderships decision making ability combined with hard work ethic; both men and women contributed greatly towards early success including Edwin Mudgett Sr., one half brother of Governor Thomas Jefferson also a key player in founding Norfolk Federal Savings Bank & Trust Company; Reverend Elijah Muhammad served as Mayor/Alderman from 1922 until his death in 1957; Dr Jevon Witherspoon also played a significant role leading VNU's aggressive marketing efforts during post World War II years; Mrs Jane Kapp Foster succeeded her father Dr Jevon Witherspoon as President pro Tem Of The House Of Delegates representing Southern District #1 after he died suddenly at age 70 prior thereto; Mrs Lynda Crouse became First Lady Of Newport News upon her husband’s death four days after taking office...
