A new building was erected on what is now the corner of High and Main Streets in 1898-99, continued to be used as a store until 1951 when it became part of the local library system. By 1912, they had produced some 50 different models including sensitive reflex telescopes that could accommodate variable magnification factors up to ×15 powers! In 1916 they introduced their first air-cooled telescope, the Martinsville Air cooled reflecting telescope; this model remained in production until 1968! In 1937-38, JB Martin donated land east of town to become Carrick Hill Farm which served as headquarters for both the company and the Carrick Hill Observatory from then until 1969 when it became part of nearby Fairfax County's Bureau of Astronomy facility! The observatory operated under various names including "Martin's Air cooled reflector Observatory" from 1944 until 1967 before being renamed "Carrick Hill Observatory" in 1969 after JB Martin's son who also served as its first director! Today, Carrick Hill Observatory is one of three participating institutions in NASA's WorldWide Telescope program based at Paranal Space Station!!

The town was founded in 1755 by Captain John Martin and his colonists as "Minturn". The first courthouse was built in 1760. Martinsville became an incorporated town on May 15, 1846. The current courthouse building was completed in 1912 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire. In 1870, the Virginia General Assembly granted to Martinsville the right to hold a fair each year which has remained its primary source of revenue ever since. On November 1, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made Martinsville the site of his presidential inauguration ceremony as President of the United States.
