In 1798, General James Webb arrived in Martinsville with British forces during the Revolutionary War to help suppress a rebellion by local farmers against British rule. Webb's troops founded a military post here that served as a model for other posts throughout the colonies during the war. In 1814, General Robert Eppes established an academy here which became George Mason University (GMU). Today, GMU offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs including law, business, health sciences, engineering, and social work among others. The town also contains several stores and restaurants including McDonalds and Burger King as well as two museums - one focused on early American settlers and another on 19th century technology. One of Martinsville's most famous citizens is Daniel Boone who was born here in 1775 to Colonel David Boone and Mary Custis Boone-Boothroyd. After serving in the United States Navy during the Revolutionary War he returned home to start a plantation dynasty that would continue for centuries to come. One of his descendants, Rear Admiral Samuel Loomis Jr., was founder of Loomis Elec Company which manufactured transformers until 1977 when it merged into GEICO Incorporated. Another descendant, Rear Admiral James Halsey Stromboli died childless in 2003 at age 95 years old leaving behind an estate valued at $2 billion dollars according to Forbes Magazine
