Martinsville is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 15,921 at the 2010 census. The center of Martinsville is located in the town limits and contains the only shopping mall in Prince William County. It also has a variety of stores, including two Sears stores and one Kmart store. In addition to its main shopping district, Martinsville also has several smaller districts which include: University Park (a business park), Midtown (A full service shopping center with over 100 merchants), and Southpark (a small community north of Martinsville). Beecham purchased land near present day Martinsville to erect a public school for his son John Beecham Jr., who had emigrated from England as a boy. In 1925, Sheriff Wray Hinton began purchasing handguns from various gun dealers throughout Prince William County in order to provide law enforcement officers with necessary firearms for their duty. In 1957, Sheriff Hinton established a Self Defense Weapons Program within the sheriff's department which provided instructorships and materials to county deputies on how to use appropriate self-defense weapons during criminal incidents or encounters with suspects or criminals. Martinsville is a town in Prince Edward County, Virginia, United States. The population was 8,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Norfolk–Norfolk metropolitan area. The first European to visit Martinsville was Captain John Smith on July 24, 1607, during his mapping expedition through the Tidewater region of Virginia. He named it "Mt. Vernon." The town was chartered by James I on May 10, 1787 as "Newbern." Newbern served as the capital of Prince Edward County from 1790 to 1813 and then again from 1815 to 1861. In 1795, William Byrd Jr., one of Virginias two proprietary senators and later an inaugural delegate to the United States Congress, founded what is now Martinsville tavern as a meeting place for local farmers and merchants interested in trading with British forces stationed in North America during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). In addition to its military importance due to its location near Yorktown Peninsula's Yorktown Heights Battlefield National Monument and because it served as the terminus for many important railroads serving Northern Virginia before Interstate 95 was built nearby in 1965, Martinsville also became known for its Tobacco production until recent times when that industry has declined significantly due to increased competition from other forms of commerce such as e-commerce and streaming video services. Accordingly, much redevelopment has taken place within walking distance of downtown Martinsville over recent years including new housing developments completed along Broadway Street immediately east of Interstate 95; a renovated First Baptist Church on North Market Street; a new regional shopping mall located just east of Martinsville BART station; and numerous small businesses have opened up throughout Downtown Martinsville or adjacent neighborhoods since 2006 when plans were first unveiled for what would become known as Old Town Square which includes several blocks between Constitution Avenue NW and Main Street SE including several antique shops which reopened following Hurricane Irene in 2007.

The area now known as Martinsville was first occupied by the Powhatan Confederacy, who named it for their ancestor, Virginius Manatus. In 1819, the Virginia General Assembly renamed Martinsville after George Washington, the first U.S. President. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major routes: one leading to Petersburg and Williamsburg, and another leading to Richmond and Norfolk. In 1851, a water main was built through the town which greatly increased its population. By 1870, Martinsville had a population of over 10,000 people and was home to several large businesses including Smith & Wesson revolver manufacturing company and Randolph Furniture Company. During World War I, Martinsville played an important role invasively supporting American forces in Europe. It furnished supplies such as munitions and clothing to soldiers on both sides of the conflict. After the war ended in 1918, many new businesses began to open up in Martinsville including a grocery store, bakery, post office, barbershop/beauty salon and a movie theater that showed films until 1956. One of the most significant developments in Martinsville's history occurred during Reconstruction when African Americans began moving into abandoned white neighborhoods adjacent to the town center starting in 1871. This process helped create an integrated community that persists today

The battle was a decisive victory for the Americans and helped spur their push westward in the War of 1812. In 1839, President James K. Polk appointed James Waddell as the first superintendent of education in Virginia. Waddell made many advances in educational opportunities for Virginians, including providing free public education to all children from age 6 to 12 years old starting in 1840. He also developed a system of land grants to educate poor Virginians.
